Assignment: Mythology Research Project :: essays research papers fc

Assignment: Mythology Research Project   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  In The Yoruba and Madagascar myths of creation, the beginning of the world was a formless Chaos which was neither sea nor land. Orisha Nla, also called the Great God, was sent down from the sky to the Chaos by Olorun, the Supreme Being. His obligatory mission was to create solid land and to aid him in the accomplishment of this task, he was given a snail shell, a pigeon, and a five-toed hen. After the earth and land were separated, a chameleon was sent with Orisha Nla to inspect his work and report to the Supreme Being. Olorun was satisfied with the good things reported to him and sent Orisha Nla to finish. He planted trees, Olorun made rain water fall from the sky and grew the seeds into a great forest. The creation of earth took four days and on the fifth Orisha Nla rested from his work.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Orisha fashioned the first people from earth for Olorun, but only the Supreme Being was able to give them life. Orisha Nla hid in his workshop trying to watch him, but a spell of deep sleep was cast onto him so that only Olorun knew the secret. He made the first man and woman and their daughter and her husband. The rest of the human beings descended from the them.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  As time passed, the Creator noticed that as humans multiplied and prospered, they gave thanks to Mother Earth but forgot about him. He decided thenceforth to take the souls of half the humans signifying a tribute.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  In the myth, Why Men Must Die told by the Zulu's of Natal in South Africa, we are told how because of a slow moving tiny animal man-kind suffered and still does of mortality. The first man on earth, also a god, sent the chameleon to give humans the message that they will be like the gods and never die promptly. Because he took too long to travel to mankind and spread the good news, he sent a viper out of annoyance with the message that he changed his mind and they will not live forever.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  In the Egyptian creation story my group has studied, everything descends from Nu, the sea. His son Ra, becomes the Creator and makes a god for everything in our world: Shu, the wind god, his consort Tefnut, â€Å"The Spitter†, brought rain, Seb, the earth god, Nut, goddess of the firmament, who were the parents of Osiris and his consort Isis, and Set and his consort Nepthys.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The story also tells about sins that people had since their earliest

If you were directing the play a view from a bridge what Essay

If you were directing the play "a view from a bridge" what advice would you give to the actor playing Eddie about his character? Use quotations and close reference to the text. "A view from a bridge" is a play with five main characters. Eddie and Beatrice are married whilst they adopt Catherine, who is Eddie's niece. Marco and Rudolfo are their cousins who come to stay from Sicily. They are both illegal immigrants. A situation in the play occurs where Eddie becomes possessive of Catherine while Rudolfo plans to marry her. From the director's point of view advice to the actor playing the part of Eddie is complicated, but crucial. If I was the director looking for an actor to play Eddie it would have to be a man in his forties because that is most likely to be approximately the age of a man who has a niece the age of seventeen. Eddie is a longshoreman in the play and it would make sense if the actor was well built. In the film we watched Eddie had no real muscle definition. Also the play we watched Eddie seemed to sit in the same seat all the time. This shows that the character of Eddie was perceived as lazy, I did not think this was the case because of his active job. I would tell the actor to be more dynamic, energetic and move about the stage more, especially when he gets frustrated. The play was set in the nineteen fifties so Eddie would be told by me to dress appropriately. Eddie should wear old rugged clothes because of the limited income provided by his job. This brings me to Catherine who, in the film we watched was definitely overdressed and too clean for the circumstances she lives in. Another big aspect I would give advice to the actor about is his relationships with other characters. In the play we watched it was hard to comprehend the part where Eddie's innermost feelings for Catherine were exposed. This was the scene where Eddie came home drunk and found Rudolfo in Catherine's room. To make the scene more believable Eddie should show more love for Catherine. He should do this through body language. His facial expression should show over concern and love for Catherine or he could stare gapingly at her body. The play we watched the actors face was expressionless and all he did was say his lines whilst sitting in a chair. That was not enough. Although curiosity should be put across to the audience it should... ...s when he has the urge to be a macho and man of the house. Also respect is the most important thing and is greatly valued, this explains Eddie's behaviour towards the end of the play. I think that the background culture should be kept in mind because part of the specification is a strong macho man capable of a convincing accent and not slouching or looking lazy. In the play we watched Eddie sat in the same chair too much so either a younger is needed or an actor that looks dynamic at least. Also a good point is to advise the actor to walk about the stage when Eddie seems to struggle to express feelings through his limited vocabulary. Eddie's character shows stubbornness. He shows that attribute throughout the play and does not expect his family to correct him on anything he has already stated. I also think that when he releases bottled up emotions, like in the situation when he comes home drunk the actor should exaggerate his facial expressions. In the play we watched Eddie's face was expressionless showing poor acting, which was disappointing. As the play progresses Eddie seems to lose his mind, and also at one point he loses his sense of Sicilian justice.

The Port Phillip Prison

The Port Phillip Prison is under bad management. The prisoners trashed one of the sections of the prison in frustration to the treatment they are getting, the prisoners caused around $100,000 of damage and nearly killed a guard. This came about because of the lack of staff in the prison and bad management, which meant they had to shorten the visitation time. The visits are what keep most prisoners going. The Prison has had five deaths in custody in the last nine weeks. The Government also has is to blame for part of this problem. The Port Phillip Prison is under bad management at the moment. The prison started receiving men in mid September 1997 and in just five months the prison has proven to have very many serious problems. In the past nine weeks there have been five deaths in custody at the prison. In addition to these deaths in custody there have been reports of at least one incident of self harm and/or suicide since the prison opened. The Port Phillip Prison has been built with intergral hanging points in 580 of their cells. Five people have died because of it. Correctional Services Commissioner, John van Gronigan has stated, after the fifth death in custody at Port Phillip, that he is â€Å"satisfied with the prison's management†. The Government is claiming that because Muirhead Cells (strip cells) have no obvious hanging points, thus they have complied with recommendation 165. This is a distortion of the content, intent and nature of recommendation 165. (Recommendation 165 of the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody explicitly states that â€Å"Corrective Services authorities should carefully scrutinize equipment or facilities provided at institutions with a view to eliminating and/or reducing the potential for harm. Similarly steps should be taken to screen hanging points in police and prison cells†.) Numerous coroner findings in Victoria, South Australia and Queensland have also recommended the removal of hanging points in both prison and police cells. Yet the Government is claiming that it has implemented recommendation 165. In Port Phillip prison the shower screens provide additional hanging points – it was from the shower screens that two men (George Drinken and Adam Irwin) were found hanging. It is plainly obvious that if the prison was built without the intergral hanging points there would not have been five deaths in the Prison. These people have died at Port Phillip Prison: – 30 October 1997 George Drinken aged 28 years, on remand, was found hanging from the shower fitting in his cell. This was an unnecessary death if they had of build the Prison without the hanging points. – 16 December 1997 Adam Irwin aged 20 years, on remand, was found hanged with an electrical cord from the shower fitting. This also was an unnecessary death. – 4 January 1998 Vienh Chi Tu aged 20 years, on remand died on Sunday afternoon. Believed to have died of an overdose. This death could have been avoided if the guards enforced the rules. – Another two men have died in the prison allegedly of `natural causes'. How can eight staff control Port Phillip prison during the night. Eight staff to monitor and respond to emergencies in a prison with almost six hundred male prisoners consisting of remand, high security, sentenced, intellectually disabled and vulnerable prisoners and protection prisoners. Is this serious? Unfortunately ‘Yes†, furthermore the vast majority of staff have no related experience in corrections. This is just ridiculous. You could say what the prisoners did was stupid but the prisoners had no other way of showing their anger and frustration of the bad conditions they had to face. Group 4 have even contracted a private detective, John Barclay, Cobra Executive Protection, to undertake an â€Å"independent† investigation into the deaths of the first four men to die in custody at Port Phillip. But this is all pointless if they don†t change the management and get rid of the intergral hanging points. The guards who work there are now taking action to get the Prison fixed up and make the place safer for the workers and the prisoners. Group 4 Correction Services will have to do something to fix the problem, or they will have a real bad name about their company. Which will then cause people to think of them as the bad ones when ever something comes up in the media about them. That will cause a lot of problems for the company if they don†t act. In conclusion I have to say that at the moment Port Phillip Prison is under very bad management. Something must be done to stop the amount of deaths in the prison. They must get rid of all the intergral hanging points in the prison to try and stop some of the deaths. They must change their management also. They must crack down on the prisoners using drugs and the people who bring them into the prisoners must be told that NO drugs are allowed. Port Phillip prison is a sham at the moment and it must be fixed.

The Rise and Spread of Islam

The rise and appeal of Islam can be attributed to many factors. Islam became popular because of the Qur’an, Muhammad’s personality, the immense faith among the early followers, it’s logical and clear principles and that those principles were consistent and logical (al-Islam). It was because of Mohammed’s personality that created the interest in Islam; the religion was not immediately popular when it was first introduced. It was only after Muhammad and his followers left their home for Medina, where the population welcomed Muhammad and the Muslims. Only after Muhammad became famous was he able to garner more followers and converts to Islam (World History Connections To Today, 257). Islam’s believers increased on a daily basis because of the caliphs and their agendas. Islam exploded rapidly during the times of the caliphate through successful military conquests. The campaigns were so successful and far-reaching, that by 750 AD, Muslims controlled land from present-day Iran in the east to present-day Portugal in the west and in North Africa to the south (World History Connections To Today, 260). Many people remained loyal to the religion after the empire detiorated because of the clear principle of the belief in one God. There were no others next to him, just prophets. There were also no conflicts within the religious teachings and the principle of treating all creatures with respect resonated within its followers. It was rare to have religious tolerance practiced toward different religions, yet the Qur’an celebrated it (al-Islam). Muhammad’s popularity was the primary attraction to Islam, but its message, principles and duties is what has kept the religion together throughout many centuries. People are still dutifully performing the requirements set forth in the five pillars which are, accepting God as the one true God, performing daily prayers, giving to the poor, fasting during Ramadan and the pilgrimage to Mecca (World History Connections To Today, 258). Many factors had to congeal to form the Muslim faith, and it will continue to be strong as long as the basic tenets of the religion are held sacred. Works Cited Guertin, Wilson H. , and, Mohammed J. Chirri. â€Å"Why Is Islam Popular? † al-Islam. 2 January 2009

Strategic Management In Organizations Assignment Brief – Country Manager ALLELES Business Game Simulation. The Country Manager Simulation (or business game), will give you and your team a rewarding and engaging opportunity to actually manage the international expansion activities for a multinational company. During lectures, tutorials and workshops will be exploring the complex arena of Strategic Management and International Strategic management from various perspectives rea l world perspectives. You will note from your module handbook that we will be devoting part of the aerogramme to learning using the Country Manager (ALLELES) simulation. The output from this will form a part of your final assessment on this module. The ALL SMILE case will also be used as an assessment vehicle for you to demonstrate your learning on the theory and concepts which we will be exploring in the lectures, tutorials and in your self-managed readings. Each team will develop and implement strategies for entering into and expanding throughout the Latin American region for a consumer packaged goods firm that manufactures and markets toothpaste. You will determine which countries to enter, when to enter them, where to reduce your products, which customers to target, the products you want to launch and at what prices, the channels through which you want to sell, and manage various marketing communications activities. The simulation will enable you to â€Å"learn by doing†. Y our team will develop a marketing plan. Then you will manage the business by implementing your plan (making decisions) over a simulated eight-year period. Finally, you will complete an end-of-game report. You will as the course progresses be drawing on a range of concepts and theories to help your knowledge and understanding and other learning outcomes and which will inform the analysis, evaluation, development and implementation of international strategies. It is important that you reflect upon and draw on these and previous concepts and underpinning theories to inform your analysis, evaluations and decisions. You will be using the Country Manager simulation to evaluate and develop new international market entry and development opportunities. The simulation is based upon a wealth of country data (political, economic, social etc) and the company for which you are working is up against established competition. You will be developing market entry strategies, and managing regional expans ion in Latin America. You will learn how to manage these activities to create customer value internationally. The value creation process involves understanding customers, collaborators, competitors, and a company's own core competencies, and using this knowledge for competitive advantage and growth. The Country Manager simulation will entail initially establishing a new international market for entry as the home market has become saturated. Following a detailed comparative country analysis your team will then go onto establish a brand presence in that market. You will need to make decisions on he level of FDA to make and to go on to attempt to maximize the companies strategic and financial position in that country. You will then be expanding into additional foreign markets in Latin America. It is very important to read and become thoroughly familiar with the Country Manager ALL SMILE case study on. This case will be used not only dynamically in the simulation to develop your analysis and decision making skills, but will also be used to integrate with and apply key concepts/theories On ISM and overall help to make the learning process closer to reality than desk based case work Your team needs to develop a Strategic Marketing Plan – the roadman for managing your entry, growth, and expansion into Latin America. Before working on your Marketing Plan, read the entire Country Manager users manual. Your plan will cover most of these topics. In order to do so, you will need to use the various reports (environment, competition, internal) to analyze the current situation and forecast how it will (or how you want it to) change. The goal is to determine what strategy you want to set and how to implement it (I. E. , what decisions you will need to make) in order to maximize your nutrition to corporate headquarters.Because you report to both the Toothpaste Category Management and the Latin America organizations (see Figure 1 , page 8 of the user manual), you must work toward maximizing your country cumulative contribution as well as the overall cumulative contribution for the region. Your instructions are to do a sequential entry (waterfall) strategy into Latin America – that is, you are not to enter more than one country at a time. For example, you might enter one country in period 1 , a second country in period 3, a third country in period 5.You should enter at least three countries. See the next page for more specific entry and expansion instructions. Initial Strategic Plan Entry & Expansion Instructions Firstly, enter the Latin American market: Enter your first country. Begin by launching no more than 4 SKU. Add more SKU in subsequent periods as you believe the market bears and consistent with your strategy. You should advance two-three periods. Continue to play in the initial market, expanding into a multi-segment SST taste.Secondly, begin regional expansion: After establishing your business in the initial market, enter into one addit ional market in Period 3 or 4. Begin by launching 4 or more SKU in the second market. Continue to play in the initial and second markets, expanding your multi segment strategy. Thirdly, continue regional expansion: Continue to play in the initial market, and 2nd market, now expanding into a third market in Period 5 or 6.Follow the same procedure as above for the third market Complete all nine periods In the event that you have made a major blunder (e. G. , entering an MSP of 10. 0 instead of 1. 0), you must contact your tutor to replay a period. You must complete your final set of decisions within the specified schedule dates. Note: Be sure to keep a log of your decisions and results each period. After each period, save/print the Performance Summary (Consolidated – Internal). Con. Case Study of IPD Company

Basing on the Information provided In the case material and refers to our class learning, the causes of the ineffectiveness of the performance appraisal program which installed in the BID Company are as follows: Goal misalignment with company's overall goal Whenever appropriate, employees' performance goals should be ensured aligning tit organization's what an organization exists for, things that an organization and Its employees consider Important and desirable, courses of action to achieve organization's overall goals. Aligning employee performance goals is known as the Strategic Role of performance appraisal. In this case, we can see that the company had enjoyed good profitability by emphasizing excellent service quality before the performance appraisal program was Installed, three major departments which of Front office Is responsible for communicate with both external clients and Internal co-workers, the first stage of heir working chain and also the door of business of the compa ny; Warehousing department responsible for inventory control, this is the second stage of the working chain to ensure the warehouse has sufficient inventory; Delivery department responsible for transporting the products to retail for selling, this is the third stage of the working chain which provide sufficient supply for frontline sales. Refer to their job description, the weight of mission, values and strategies of the BID Company somehow is approach to provide services to clients and emphasis on laity but quantity thus meet with overall's goal rather than others. After the new program has launched, it was not exercise properly the strategic role of performance appraisal and learnt the lesson In the hard way because the program approach to measuring what employees produce but how employees do their Job, It focus on quantity rather than overall quality and corporate communication. For example, front office staffs performance measured by number of orders taken per person per week but no approach to measure the service and communication quality; warehousing Taft measured by number of cases of product handled per man-hour and time required to load each truck but no mention of communication and occupational safety standard; as for truck driver, performance is measured by the length of time to criterion.A performance management system would be only effective when the employees in BID Company are clear about their duties and Job standards and match with the organizational goals so that they work with their full potential to meet organizational objectives. Any misalignment would seriously undermine the performance of an organization 2. Discuss how to improve the Company's performance planning and propose a set of performance evaluation criteria that you consider appropriate for the Company's three major department. A major challenge for The BID Company is to have employees who are passionate about what they do and constantly strives to perform at their best. The aim of which is to ensure that the employee's performance is supporting the strategic aims. The consensus of most existing research on appraisal systems is that to be effective, the appraisal process must be considered fair and accurate by those having their reference evaluated, set in establishing performance goals should accordance to employees' duties and responsibilities, as for appropriate performance evaluation criteria that Vive propose for the company's three major department are as follows: Front office Since office staff is responsible for receiving and processing orders, it involves telephone services manner to both internal and external parties so that telephone service performance at front office should be including measure both behavior and result: 1 . Telephone service manner as rated monthly by supervisor should 4 or above on a 5-point Liker Scale. 2. Incoming calls answered within three rings in a month should be 90% or higher. 3.Customer satisfaction monthly rating on t elephone service should be 4 or above on a 5-point Liker Scale. 4. Number of customer complaints per month on telephone service should be 3 or lower. Warehousing department Warehouse staff responsible for receiving, storing and loading computer products on trucks, the evaluation criteria should be focused on result and behavior: 1 . Communication with front office as rated monthly by supervisor should 4 or above on a 5-point Liker Scale. . Receiving and storing computer products which from front office should be finished within a day. 3. Time to load each truck per month should be average 30 minutes or lower. 4. Number of warehouse accidents per month should be lower than 1.Delivery department Delivery department responsible for transporting the computer products to retail outlets, it involves time management and driving safety and so that the evaluation criteria should be focused on result: 1 . Delivery products to retail in a month should time needs for delivery in each route. 2. Products must be 100% in good condition whether received from warehousing department and/or delivered to retail. 3. Recommend what other actions the Company should take to make the performance appraisal program become a big success. Performance appraisal is a system where not every employee in the company may like but every employee should be treated as the same because they are a huge part of a company in order for the company to become successful. Thus, a few suggestions are recommended for the appraisal system in BID Company, to be better serving as an effective efficient system. One of the things on is to offer proper training to each line supervisors. Through raining, supervisors may then rank the employees with correct Judgment. This will mean that there is no sign of them using progressive discipline. In simpler term, no bias error will occur. Secondly, positive feedback on performance related to goals shall be conducted, as this will gives the worker a sense of achievement, r ecognition and accomplishment, in which the company might miss it. Thirdly, BID Company needs to incorporate multiple sources of information from peers, subordinates, customers, and employee self-evaluations.The company will want to conduct additional research on how these types of measures can be reliably ND validly developed and integrated into the appraisal process. This helps reducing sampling error by increasing the number of observations and reduces the effect of possible biases. This way, the supervisors and managers will feel more comfortable, since they are no longer solely responsible for what happens to the person as a result of the rating. Probably there are still many ways to be researched and then be conducted. However, I do think these three ways are as important as they will lead the performance appraisal to a better system in BID Company.

Existentialism in Literature Essay

Existentialism in literature is a movement or tendency that emphasizes individual existence, freedom, and choice. While Existentialism was never an organized literary movement, the tenets of this philosophy have influenced many diverse writers around the world and readers can detect existential elements in their fiction. Americans writers like William Faulkner, Ernest Hemingway and John Steinbeck reveal existential elements in their writing. Perhaps the most prominent theme in existentialist writing is that of choice. Humanity’s primary distinction, in the view of most existentialists, is the freedom to choose. Because we are free to choose our own paths, existentialists have argued, we must accept the risk and responsibility of following our commitments wherever they lead. American writers Henry David Thoreau and Ralph Waldo Emerson often wrote about these concepts. Existentialism is not dark. It is not depressing. Existentialism is about life. Existentialists believe in living—and in fighting for life. The politics of existentialist writers around the world varies widely, but each seeks the most individual freedom for people within a society. Despite encompassing this wide range of philosophical, religious, and political ideologies, the underlying concepts of existentialism are constant: ? Mankind has free will ? Life is a series of choices ? Few decisions are without any negative consequences ? Some events and occurrences are irrational or absurd, without explanation. ? If one makes a decision, he or she must follow through. So existentialism, broadly defined, is a set of philosophical systems concerned with free will, choice, and personal responsibility. Because we make choices based on our experiences, beliefs, and biases, those choices are unique to us—and made without an objective form of truth. There are no â€Å"universal† guidelines for most decisions, existentialists believe. Even trusting science is often a â€Å"leap of faith. † The existentialists conclude that human choice is subjective, because individuals finally must make their own choices without help from such external standards as laws, ethical rules, or traditions. Because individuals make their own choices, they are free; but because they freely choose, they are completely responsible for their choices. The existentialists emphasize that freedom is necessarily accompanied by responsibility. Furthermore, since individuals are forced to choose for themselves, they have their freedom—and therefore their responsibility—thrust upon them. They are â€Å"condemned to be free. † Many existentialist writers stress the importance of passionate individual action in deciding questions of both personal morality and truth. Personal experience and acting on one’s own convictions are essential in arriving at the truth. 17th-century French philosopher and existentialist Blaise Pascal saw human existence in terms of paradoxes. He believed that â€Å"We know truth, not only by reason, but also by the heart. † And as many existentialists, he acknowledges that â€Å"It is the fight alone that pleases us, not the victory. † The modern adage that the journey is more important than the final destination applies to this idea. Danish philosopher Soren Kierkegaard, who was the first writer to call himself existential, reacted against traditional thoughts by insisting that the highest good for the individual is to find his or her own unique vocation. As he wrote in his journal, â€Å"I must find a truth that is true for me . . . the idea for which I can live or die. † Existentialists have argued that no objective, rational basis can be found for moral decisions. The 19th-century German philosopher, Friedrich Nietzsche contended that the individual using free will must decide which situations are to count as moral situations. He believed that â€Å"There are no facts, only interpretations. † . . . and he is famous for this well known adage:â€Å"That which does not kill me, makes me stronger. † The 19th-century Russian novelist Fyodor Dostoyevsky is probably the most well-known existentialist literary figure. In his book Notes from the Underground the alienated anti-hero questions experiences in life that are unpredictable and sometimes self-destructive. French writer, Jean Paul Sartre wrote that man can will nothing unless he has first understood that he must count on no one but himself; that he is alone, abandoned on earth in the midst of his infinite responsibilities, without help, with no other aim than the one he sets himself, with no other destiny than the one he forges for himself on this earth. There is no ultimate meaning or purpose inherent in human life; in this sense life is absurd. We are forlorn, abandoned in the world to look after ourselves completely. The only foundation for values is human freedom, and that there can be no external or objective justification for the values anyone chooses to adopt. † When the Swedish Academy granted the Nobel Prize in Literature to Sartre for his work which, they recognized as â€Å"rich in ideas and filled with the spirit of freedom and the quest for truth, [that] has exerted a far-reaching influence on our age,† Sartre made it known that he did not wish to accept the prize. In a public announcement, in1964, Sartre expressed his regret that his refusal of the prize had given rise to a scandal, and he wished it to be known that his refusal was not meant to slight the Swedish Academy but was rather based on personal and objective reasons. Sartre pointed out that due to his conception of the writer’s task he had always declined official honors so this act was not unprecedented. He had similarly refused other awards offered to him. He stated that a writer’s acceptance of such an honor would be to associate his personal commitments with the awarding institution, and that, above all, a writer should not allow himself to be turned into an institution.
